Russia-Belarus trade increasing rapidly

RBC, 09.10.2008, Moscow 09:58:28.Trade between Russia and Belarus is expected to reach RUB 845bn (approx. USD 32.3bn) in 2008, according to preliminary results of the countries' trade and economic cooperation as part of the Union State in 2008, announced at a press conference by the heads of the Union State's permanent committee. The press conference was given by State Secretary and member of the Union State's permanent committee Vasily Khrol, as well as head of the Economy and Industrial Programs Department Oleg Yakubovich.

According to Khrol, trade between Russia and Belarus grew 60.7 percent to over USD 18bn in the first half of 2008 compared to the same period a year earlier. Exports to Russia increased 42 percent to USD 5.6bn, while imports from Russia to Belarus rose 70.8 percent to USD 12.4bn. The official stressed that Belarus remained one of Russia's key trade partners, accounting for 5 perņent of Russia's total foreign trade (up from 4.6 percent in 2007). Similarly, Russia's share in Belarus's foreign trade has broadened from 48.3 to 49 percent compared to H1 2007.
