Families needed to give Chernobyl children a holiday to remember

FAMILIES are needed to host sick youngsters from Belarus who are still suffering from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster more than 20 years ago.

The Teesside branch or "link" of the Chernobyl Children Life Line charity welcomes an influx of young people aged between seven and 12-years-old for a month every summer.

Frank and Norma Andrew, from Carlton village near Stockton took in their first foreign visitors four years ago.

They have hosted two festivals, known as Cartonbury, on their land which last year attracted 500 music lovers and raised ?3,500 for the charity.

Mr Andrew said: "About 20 children come over so we need about 10 host families. They are put with families from all walks of life throughout Teesside.

"We have a dentist in the link who looks after the children's teeth free of charge and Specsavers opticians test their eyes and provide them with free glasses.

"For us it is very rewarding experience, some families get very attached. You can certainly see the benefits they get of having fresh food and air."
