OSCE to publish border security guide

MINSK, Belarus, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Security authorities concluded a border crossing evaluation at a meeting in Belarus Thursday in an effort to establish a guide on securing border checkpoints.

The border security evaluation, organized by officials from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, was designed to contribute to a best practices handbook being written to support a wider Central and Eastern European effort to counter terrorist groups and transnational criminal organizations trafficking illicit goods between countries, the OSCE reported.

The two-day meeting took place in Belarus' capital, Minsk, and included top customs and border security experts from around the world. Officials say the best practices handbook is also part of an effort to assist in establishing efficient border crossings to help foster important trade and transit in Central and Eastern Europe.

"The handbook will facilitate legal trans-border commercial movement," Alexey Stukalo, OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities deputy coordinator, said in a statement.

"It will contribute to more efficient border crossings and at the same time reduce opportunities for corruption, illicit trafficking and transnational crime and terrorism."
