EU plans to ease political isolation of Belarus

LUXEMBOURG (AP) - European Union nations are planning to ease the political isolation of Belarus and are considering lifting a travel ban against the regime of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana says he wants to lift both the political ban and the travel ban on senior Belarus officials. Other leading EU officials, however, do not want to go quite that far.

As part of improved relations, the EU's 27 foreign ministers will hold talks with their Belarus counterpart, Sergei Martynov, on Monday. It is the first high-level EU contact with Belarus since the EU put a ban on such meetings in 2004.
