Belarus starts major military drill with Russia

MOSCOW, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Belarus started Wednesday a massive month-long military exercise which will involve troops from Russia, according to reports reaching here.

The week-long Fall-2008 operational and tactical exercises will involve some 8,500 servicemen, 40 aircraft, 60 tanks, 250 armored vehicles and nearly 40 artillery batteries, said Belarusian media.

Russian military aircraft, including MiG-29 fighters, Su-25 close-support jets and Mi-24 attack helicopters, will conduct joint exercises with the Belarusian Air Force, RIA Novosti news agency cited Vladimir Drik, a Russian Air Force spokesman, as saying.

The participation of Russian aircraft in the exercises is part of the ongoing Russia-Belarus Stability-2008 drills, said Drik.

The Stability-2008 exercises were designed to practice the strategic deployment of the armed forces, including the nuclear triad, to counter potential threats near the Russian border, according to Russian military sources.
