Europe can revise its policy to Belarus in October - German ambassador

MINSK. Oct 3 (Interfax) - German Ambassador to Belarus Gebhardt Weiss does not rule out that Europe's policy towards Belarus can be discussed and may be revised at the next meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg in October.

"It can be seen through various channels from various capitals, including Washington, that these discussions are now more active and urgent against the backdrop of recent events, which include not only the September 28 election," Weiss told Interfax, asked when visa sanctions against Belarusian officials can be lifted.

The ambassador noted that he does not have information whether the lifting of visa sanctions from Belarusian officials will be discussed at the next meeting of EU foreign ministers.

"I do not have this information. However, I proceed from the fact that the general situation in Belarus will be discussed. That is why I do not rule out that changes in Europe's policy are possible. A telephone conversation with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko at the initiative of [EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy] Javier Solana ahead of the election was a signal in this direction," Weiss said.
