Srvatka: New Business Opportunities for Slovaks in Belarus

Bratislava, October 20 (TASR-SLOVAKIA) - While attending the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee on Monday, newly appointed Slovak ambassador to Belarus Marian Srvatka said that there are new possibilities for Slovak businesses opening up in this Eastern European country.

He said that several hundreds of businesses are being offered up in privatisation sales. He added that there is scope for entrepreneurs particularly in towns with 50,000 inhabitants or less as conditions designed for the development of six free-economy zones in the country are now in process for towns of this size.

Former Slovak foreign affairs minister Eduard Kukan, also on the committee, said that economic co-operation with Belarus should develop on a reasonable and guaranteed level. In this vein, he suggested that Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko is not a democrat. Kukan added Lukashenko shouldn't be approved embraced by the international community and engage in multilateral economic activities just because he released several political prisoners before the elections earlier this year.

However, Kukan does agree with having a broader cultural exchange with Belarus.
