Republic of Belarus Seeks IMF Assistance, To Start Discussions in Few Days

(RTTNews) - Wednesday, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund said in a statement that the Belarusian authorities have requested financial assistance from the Fund under a program that could be supported by a Stand-By Arrangement.

Strauss-Kahn added that the Republic of Belarus was adversely influenced by the global financial crisis and its access to external finance. Meanwhile, the changing environment in trade had a negative impact on the nation's balance of payments.

The fund will start discussions with the authorities in the next few days on the program. The amount of financial assistance under a Stand-By Arrangement has yet to be determined, Strauss-Kahn stated.

The agency is currently discussing possible loan packages for Hungary, Iceland, Pakistan and Ukraine. The Fund is also in discussions with some other nations about possible financing needs and is providing confidential policy advice.
