Belarus' economy and stability help develop Armed Forces, deputy defence minister says

The country's economic basis and stability help develop the Belarusian Armed Forces, Head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, First Deputy Defence Minister of Belarus Sergei Gurulev told the Belarusian and Union State mass media in Minsk on October 23, reproted Belta.

"Well-educated patriotic people and understanding of the tasks promote the development of the Belarusian Armed Forces. The scientific foundation is of great importance as well. I am sure we have chosen the right path by restoring the system of the territorial defence that helps us accomplish the major goals of the Belarusian defence with the lowest material expenses," Sergei Gurulev said.

The country has also developed the plan of containment. "Deployment of the anti-missile defence system in the Czech Republic and Poland, NATO expansion and supporting Georgia and Ukraine NATO membership shows that the military and political situation around Belarus has been growing dangerous. I do not say that tomorrow there can be a conflict or the situation will change. I do not deny NATO's peaceful intentions; facts and actions, however, have some different character," said the Head of the General Staff.

The main armament and equipment will be brought in line with modern-day requirements by 2015. Nevertheless, Belarus does not hope to reach technical and technological parity with the states that are able to spend billions of dollars on their defence, Sergei Gurulev said. "Equipment is not a panacea. There are other means of containment," Sergei Gurulev added.
