Belarusian opposition pleased by authorities' permission to hold rallyin memory of ancestors

MINSK. Oct 28 (Interfax) - Belarusian opposition activists see the Minsk authorities' permission to hold the Dzyady rally in memory of ancestors on November 2 as "a good sign," Lyavon Borshchevsky, chairman of the party Belarusian National Front, told a press conference in Minsk.

"We see that the Minsk authorities are meeting us halfway. It is obvious that the officials in Minsk are trying to manifest liberalism," said Viktor Ivashkevich, the head of the rally's organizational committee.

"Despite the tough resistance of the Communist authorities, Dzyady- 1988 [the first mass street rally held in Belarus in memory of ancestors] shook society and gave people new ideas," Borshchevsky said.

The rally has been sanctioned by both the Minsk city executive committee and the Minsk region's executive committee, the organizers of the committee said.
