Europe Understands Belarus' Restraint Over Caucasian Events - German Ambassador

MINSK. Oct 3 (Interfax) - Belarus' restraint over the recognition of independence for Abkhazia and South Ossetia is a factor, which promotes relations between Minsk and Brussels, German Ambassador to Belarus Gebhardt Weiss said in an interview with Interfax.

"We understand the restraint which Belarus shows. I think this restraint is a part of a broader Brussels' view on Minsk," Weiss said, when asked about the position of Belarusian authorities on the Caucasian events and about what Belarus' non-recognition of the two republics.

"Our position, the one of Germany and the European Union, is well known. We think it was not right of Russia to make this move," the ambassador said.

Earlier, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia can be discussed by the Belarusian parliament, which is to meet for the first time in late October.
