EU invites Belarus for talks

By Alethea Reynolds

The European Union has invited Belarus for talks in Luxembourg at the end of the month. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana conveyed the message to Belarus Foreign Minister Sergei Martinov.

The move comes less than a week after general elections won by hardline President Alexander Lukashenko drew international condemnation.

EU and other Western observers said the poll was rigged and excluded the opposition. The EU has consequently ruled out lifting the existing sanctions.

Forty politicians from Belarus, including the president, have been banned from entering the EU since the 2006 presidential election, which was judged to breach international norms. -
