President Lukashenko hails recent elections, calls them historic

MINSK. Oct 6 (Interfax) - The recent parliamentary in Belarus will influence its relations with other countries, President Aleksandr Lukashenko announced Monday.

"Had it not been for the pressure from the West and the opposition, these elections might not have been as successful. The people decided everything. This is what makes these elections stand so high - they are of historic importance," Lukashenko said during his meeting with Chief Elections Commissioner Lidiya Yermoshina.

The elections will considerably influence developments in Belarus and its relations with other states, he said, adding that "those were our best elections as regards information provision, press conferences and meetings with international observers".

"Never mind if our elections are criticized, they were historic," Lukashenko said.

At the same time he agreed that "there may have been some shortcomings, we do not say we are ideal, but those were historic elections which have shown to the whole world that, whatever observers say, democracy is most inherent in our nation".

There are 110 deputies in the newly-elected House of Representatives but not a single opposition representative.
