Alla Petrova, BC, Riga,

Belarus wishes to develop cooperation with Latvia by establishing joint machine manufacturing ventures in Daugavpils, as Ambassador of Belarus to Latvia Aleksandr Gerasimenko said during a visit to Daugavpils (Latgale Province).

"It is a well-known fact that mechanical engineering is well developed in Belarus. Through joint effort, this sector could also be revived in Daugavpils," Belarusian ambassador said, explaining that the main focus would be on construction of trams and busses.

Gerasimenko said that the joint cooperation projects could be implemented at the Daugavpils Locomotive Repair Factory. The factory is spacious enough, it has qualified workforce and suitable technical equipment, writes LETA.

Belarusian Consul General Gennady Akhramovich in turn urged entrepreneurs in Latgale Province to turn to the Belarusian Consulate General in Daugavpils and present their ideas for cooperation projects. "In case of mutual interest, results will certainly follow," the diplomat said.

Daugavpils Mayor Janis Lacplesis (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way) thanked the Belarusian Embassy and the Consulate General for interesting cooperation offers and expressed confidence that such projects could serve as a good stimulus for the economy of Daugavpils.

At a meeting with representatives of the Daugavpils City Council, Ambassador Gerasimenko and Consul General Akhramovich also discussed options for various joint energy, construction and tourism industry projects, as the Daugavpils City Council informs.

Currently there are over 300 enterprises with Belarusian capital operating in Latvia. Over the last two years, their trade turnover has increased more than fourfold.
