Following the fourth session of the Serbia-Belarus Intergovernmental Committee for Trade and Economic Cooperation, held at the Serbian Government Palace, Kalanovic pointed out that the two sides had reached agreement on a majority of issues, adding that the next committee session is scheduled for 2010.

Minister for the National Investment Plan Verica Kalanovic yesterday stated that economic cooperation between Serbia and Belarus has been successful, but there is still room for improvement.

She stressed that the two sides signed a free trade agreement, which will encourage the setting up of joint factories for producing tractors, construction equipment and buses and therefore help develop cooperation in the agricultural, traffic and tourism fields.

Belarus Minister of Trade Valentin Chekanov said that the activities of the Committee will contribute significantly to the promotion of economic and trade cooperation between Serbia and Belarus.

Agreements on business cooperation between Serbia and Russia and cooperation between the Serbian Export Credit and Insurance Agency and the Beleksimgarant Company from Belarus were also signed.

According to the Committee's data, this year's trade exchange between the two countries stood at $23.7 million, which is 28% down on the same period last year.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Belarus opened a representative office in Belgrade. The chairman of the chamber, Vasily Vasilyevich Romanov, said at the opening that he hopes the office will boost trade between Serbia and Belarus to EUR500 million.

He went on to say this is realistic and feasible, because the two countries' economies are compatible. Belarus Trade Minister Sergei Valentinovich Tsekanov said that the opening of the office is a part of ongoing efforts to intensify business cooperation between the countries.

Tsekanov said that trade between Serbia and Belarus is constantly growing threefold in the last six years and added that he believes 2009 will be a turning point in SerbianBelarus economic ties.

The deputy chairman of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, Mihailo Vesovic, stated that the opening of the office will give Belarus businesses easier access the Serbian market.

He also stressed that the Serbian chamber will do what it can to help the Belarus trade office and expressed hope that trade between the two countries will grow despite the world economic crisis.

Dragomir Karic will be the chief representative of the Belarus Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Belgrade.
