Belarusian foreign ministry comments on UN resolution on violation of human rights in Belarus

"This document appeared as a result of serious political and diplomatic pressure from the US side that used the maximum of what it had," Head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Information Department Andrei Popov is quoted as saying by a REGNUM correspondent. "In terms of the contents, the resolution is an absolutely ordinary document which is full of cliches and stereotypes, which are completely unsubstantiated and we have reiterated on it."

According to Popov, the attempt to push through a similar document in 2004 was blocked by the UN General Assembly. "Under such conditions, we have any reason to say that, just like the UN Commission on Human Rights eradicated not long ago, the General Assembly is often used as a scene for getting even with someone politically," he stressed. "It cannot but cause regret, as a situation like this is contradicting to the very gist of international organizations being established by nations for serving those nations' interests; all of them without any exception."

Nevertheless, Belarus continues speaking for strengthening UN role. The republican foreign ministry will continue confirming the status of one of the states - founders of the United Nations playing a significant role in solving most vital problems of the present. It is worth mentioning, Belarus was elected as member of ECOSOS, under an initiative of the Belarusian side a resolution was passed unanimously on establishing global partnership against human trafficking. "It is the basis we shall be relying upon while carrying out our activity at the UN and in the world in general," Popov said.
