Lukashenko on Visit to Iran

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko arrived in Iran on Sunday for a two-day official visit accompanied by political and economic advisors. IRNA, the official Iranian news agency, reported that Lukashenko was met at the airport in Tehran by Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Trade Minister Massoud Mir-Kazemi.

A meeting between Lukashenko and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scheduled for Monday morning.

Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergey Martynov told France Presse news agency that Lukashenko's visit is intended to strengthen ties between the two countries and kick off several large economic projects. "Iran and Belarus have similar views on international problems and their solution," Martynov noted.

The Iranian news agency stated that Lukashenko will discuss economic and trade relations. A number of documents are expected to be signed during the visit that will strengthen Iranian-Belarusian ties on the state and interagency levels.
