Iran, Belarus sign 8 documents for cooperation

Iran and Belarus here Tuesday signed eight documents for expansion of their bilateral cooperation in various fields.

The documents were inked by Iranian and Belarussian officials prior to an official ceremony held for Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko before his departure for home.

The documents laid down agreements for cooperation in the oil industry sector, trade and in natural damage prevention and control.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic News Agency's (IRNA) Managing Director Jalal Fayyazi and director of Belarus' official news agency (BelTa) inked an agreement for exchange of information.

Officials of the Islamic Republic Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) and the National State Television and Radio Company of Belarus also signed similar agreements for cooperation.

Officials of the two countries also inked agreements giving Tehran and Minsk the status of "sister cities" and providing for legal cooperation on civil affairs.

The heads of Iran's Standards and Industrial Research Institute Belarus' Committee for Standardization, Metrology and Certification (BELST) also signed a cooperation agreement.

The two presidents, before attending a press conference, issued a joint statement affirming agreements and high points of the visit.

Lukashenko, accompanied by a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, arrived here Sunday night for an official two-day visit.

He held talks with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and President Ahmadinejad on Monday.

The Republic of Belarus, a former Soviet state, is a landlocked state in northeastern Europe with a population of 10.2 million. Its capital is Minsk.

It is bounded by Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest, by Ukraine to the south, by Russia to the east and by Poland to the west.
