Belarusian Authorities Protest Against U.S. Economic Sanctions

Alyaksandr Sychou, Belarus's permanent representative to the OSCE, has protested against the new economic sanctions imposed by Washington on Belarus's largest petrochemical company, Belnaftakhim, Belapan reported on November 15. Sychou made the comments at a meeting of the OSCE's Permanent Council in Vienna. The same day, Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Viktar Haysyonak handed a diplomatic note of protest concerning the financial sanctions to U.S. Ambassador to Belarus Karen Stewart. The U.S. Treasury Department recently froze any assets under U.S. jurisdiction belonging to Belnaftakhim and its representatives, and forbids Americans from doing business with the company, which it says is controlled by President Alyaksandr Lukashenka (see "RFE/RL Newsline," November 14, 2007).
