Belarus: president greets new Catholic archbishop

Minsk, Nov. 12, 2007 (CWNews.com) - President Aleksandr Lukashenko of Belarus sent his greetings as Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz was installed as Archbishop of Minsk on November 10.

The congratulatory message from Lukashenko was noteworthy because the government of Belarus has adopted a policy of strict regulation for all religious groups except the Orthodox. Lukashenko, a close ally of Russia, has consistently shown his favor toward the Moscow patriarchate.

Archbishop Kondrusiewicz replaces the 93-year-old Cardinal Kazimierz Swiatek, who was present along with the other bishops of Belarus at the Saturday installation ceremony. Cardinal Edmund Szoka, the American-born former president of the Vatican city-state governorate, was also in attendance.
