Belarus is one of most important trading partners of Stavropol krai

Belarus is one of the most important foreign trading partners of the Stavropol krai. In 2007 the country ranked third after Azerbaijan and the USA among the countries - most important foreign trading partners of the region, deputy chairman of the Stavropol krai government Gennady Zaitsev said at a business-forum in the Belarusian chamber of commerce and industry in Minsk.

"A distinctive feature of our trade cooperation is that imports from Belarus exceed exports. In terms of import to the Stavropol krai Belarus holds the first place," Gennady Zaitsev said. According to him, back in 2005 the trade turnover between Belarus and Stavropol krai was $67.1 million, in 2006 it was $73.3 million, in 2007 it reached $102.3 million, reported Belta.

A promising area of cooperation between Belarus and Stavropol krai is the supply of farm machines including leasing services, Gennady Zaitsev said. "We can also cooperate in processing and selling of farm produce, selling of the equipment for poultry farms. There is a need to intensify cooperation between our chambers of commerce and industry," Gennady Zaitsev noted. Among the advantages of the partnership relations with Belarus he named close integration in the Union State, single customs space and complementary nature of the economies of Belarus and Stavropol krai.

According to Gennady Zaitsev, there are ten companies with the Belarusian capital in the Stavropol krai. The companies are involved in the construction, trade, consumer goods production, science and research activity. As of July 1, 2008, the investments from Belarus in the Stavropol krai totaled $0.6 million, 0.1% of the total foreign investments in the Stavropol krai.

A delegation of the Stavropol krai is in Belarus on a visit on November 11-13. The delegation is led by Gennady Zaitsev, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Stavropol krai. According to the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the delegation has already visited Belkommunmash and MAZ. On November 12, representatives of seven companies of the Stavropol krai and over 20 Belarusian companies are taking part in business negotiations at the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Apart from trade and economic cooperation, the delegation of the Stavropol krai is interested in Belarus' experience in addressing social issues. The Russian delegation is expected to visit the Social Security Fund, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Healthcare Ministry.

In January-August 2008, the trade between Belarus and the Stavropol krai made up $97.3 million, 1.5 times up over the same period of 2007. Exports reached $65 million (up 31.2%), imports - $32.3 million (up 2.1 times). A trade surplus was $32.7 million.
