Last-ditch talks to save Belarus children's visit

LAST-DITCH talks are under way to persuade the Belarusian government to relent and let 1,000 sick children visit Ireland this Christmas.

Talks over the past three months have failed to fully resolve a controversial impasse with the Belarusian authorities -- and now exchange visits organised by Chernobyl Children's Project (CCP) are in jeopardy.

CCP founder, Adi Roche, admitted that talks in Brussels may represent the last hope of vulnerable children getting to spend Christmas in Ireland with families.

The ban was imposed after the Belarusian government was embarrassed by Tanya Kazyra (16) who said she would rather stay with her host family in the United States than return home.
