Belarus MFA Press Secretary Andrei Popov's media comment with regard to the interview by the President of Belarus to The Wall Street Journal

The materials published following the interview with our Head of State by the American newspaper `The Wall Street Journal' of 11 November, contained an absolutely wrong interpretation of the statements made by the President on the US plans to deploy the Anti-Ballistic Missile System in Europe and Russia's response, including deployment of Iskander missile complexes.

Unfortunately, the distortion of the Belarusian President's statements resulted in multiple inventions in other media leading to wrong evaluations by both experts and politicians of different states.

In this regard, I would like to stress that the Head of Belarusian State did not make any statements on the intentions to have Iskander missile complexes deployed in Belarus in retaliation to the US steps to deploy the ABM System in Europe. One could easily make it sure when checking the transcript of the President's interview to The Wall Street Journal (in Russian) available on the official website of the Head of State.

The matter was exclusively about gradual replacement of the outdated missile complexes with new and more precise ones, possibly including Iskander missile complexes, all that within the general re-armament of the Belarusian army. You must admit that re-armament of own army is an absolutely normal and natural matter for any state.

It is also obvious that the above intentions of our state are not just plans for tomorrow. We talk about gradual performing this job, with due account taken of Belarus' financial capacities.
