Belarus hopes to attract foreign investor in communication satellite project

Belarus hopes to attract a foreign investor in a Belarusian communication satellite project, Minister of Communication and Informatization of Belarus Nikolai Pantelei told an online conference hosted by BelTA.

He noted that the project was presented at Belarus' Investment Forum in London. "The aim of the presentation was to find the partners who would not simply finance or provide credit support to the project but who could become its partners and share the responsibility for the financial risks," he said. Correspondingly they would have an opportunity to work effectively on the foreign markets using the satellite capacity," Nikolai Pantelei said. According to him, Belarus needs only 10-15% of the satellite's capacity. The other 90% will be leased.

"Therefore we would like to find an investor who has experience in this sector," the minister said. The project aroused interest in London. "But unfortunately the proposals were mainly about financing, not about the participation in the project," he said.

At the same time Nikolai Pantelei stressed that the Communication Ministry of Belarus has the suggestions and has potential partners. "I think this issue will be tackled. The main problem is not the finances or partners. In principle, we can find resources to implement the project by ourselves. The main issue today is to get a point on the stationary orbit for the satellite and its international coordination.
