Lukashenko, Gadhafi meet in Belarus

MINSK, Belarus, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi have met in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, officials say.

Lukashenko's press service confirmed that the two leaders met this weekend upon Gadhafi's arrival in Belarus and will use the Libyan leader's visit to discuss various international and bilateral issues, RIA Novosti reported Monday.

Kommersant said the Belarusian official was hopeful that the international talks would result in the resolution of key issues such as cooperative business support between the two countries.

"I would like the result of this visit to be a solution to these practical issues," Lukashenko said. "Our trade turnover clearly does not correspond to out potential. I would like to say that there are no closed subjects for cooperation with Libya."

Gadhafi said Monday that he was pleased with his journey to Belarus and viewed it as a "stimulus" for relations between the two countries.

"I see a friend in you and thank you for the warm reception and hospitality," the Syrian leader said. "I think this visit will be a stimulus for the development of our relations."
