Belarusian-Syrian trade is thriving, Syrian Ambassador says

Belarus and Syria have big potential to boost bilateral trade, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Republic of Belarus Faruq Taha told in an interview with BelTA.

"If we analyse the trade in recent years we see that it has been continuously growing. For the past two years the mutual trade increased by 60%," the Ambassador said. In 1999, the trade was just $2.1 million; in 2007, it reached $46.7 million. Over the nine months 2008 Belarusian exports to Syrian amounted to $57.7 million.

Yet the present level of bilateral trade is below the potential trade which the two countries can reach in the future. The assortment of the products the countries supply each other is very big. Belarus' major exports to Syria are trucks, tractors, semi-finished carbon steel products, dried milk and artificial fibres. Syria is considering the purchasing of Belarusian diesel fuel and power units of the Minsk Engine Plant.

Belarus traditionally imports from Syria frits and vegetables, fabrics, paper products, medicines. Since 206 Syria has been supplying Belarus with phosphate feed stock for the production of fertilisers.
