Channel of Smuggling Heroin to Eu Cut in Belarus

MINSK. Nov 4 (Interfax) - Belarusian police, together with their colleagues from other countries, foiled the activity of a transnational criminal ring smuggling heroin through Belarus to the European Union, First Deputy Belarusian Interior Minister Maj. Gen. Alexander Shchurko said in Minsk on Tuesday.

"The leader and seven members of the transnational group, involving Kyrgyz, Kazakh, Russian, Polish, Lithuanian and German nationals. This transnational criminal ring was smuggling heroin through the Belarusian territory to the EU," Shchurko told a regional UN workshop on combating drug trafficking.

Ten kilograms of heroin and 16 kilograms of poppy were seized from members of the group.

Noting that Belarus' cooperation with other countries on countering drug trafficking has expanded, the deputy minister said that Belarusian and Russian police with the assistance of German colleagues detained a Belarusian citizen in St. Petersburg from whom over 500 grams of cocaine were confiscated.
