Libyan leader Gadhafi visits Belarus

The Associated Press

MINSK, Belarus: Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has arrived in Belarus as he continues a weeklong trip through three former Soviet republics.

He was greeted by Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko, who expressed hopes of increasing ties between their countries.

Gadhafi flew to Minsk on Sunday from Moscow, which he was visiting for the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Few details were released of his talks with Russia's leaders, but Gadhafi expressed a desire to strengthen cooperation in oil and gas. He also had been expected to discuss major arms deals.

In the 1980s, Libya was a major customer for Soviet weapons. Russia now faces competition from Belarus and Ukraine for supplying arms to Libya.

Gadhafi flies to Ukraine later in the week.
