Belarusian leader seeks better US ties under Obama

MINSK, Belarus - The authoritarian president of Belarus hopes strained relations with the United States will improve when US President-elect Barack Obama takes office.

The state-run Belta news agency quotes Alexander Lukashenko as calling Obama a "young, educated" person "who can see global realities in a more realistic way."

He reportedly said Tuesday that the US would be rewarded with productive cooperation if it develops ties without preconditions.

Lukashenko's intolerance of criticism has prompted US officials in President George W. Bush's administration to call Belarus Europe's last dictatorship.

The US recently eased sanctions against Lukashenko and his government after the release of imprisoned opposition figures. - AP
