Religious leaders prevent war: Belarusian Metropolitan

Dialogue between religious leaders is important to prevent wars, Minsk and Slutsk Metropolitan, All-Belarus Patriarch Filaret said.

"Interreligious dialogue began 20 years ago and is aimed at cooperation and mutual efforts to prevent wars," he told journalists in Baku today.

"Earlier we held a conference on 'Religious Leaders Saving the Sacred Gift of Life' and we are continuing to implement this idea," he said.

Filaret is on visit to Azerbaijan to attend the birthday celebrations of Caucasus Muslims Board Chairman Sheikh-ul-Islam Haji Allahshukur Pashazade in Baku Nov. 6-7.

Baku will host the international conference on "Interreligious Dialogue: From Understanding to Mutual Cooperation" on Nov. 7.

The conference will develop interreligious dialogue and interfaith friendship, Pashazade told journalists.

"Some issues can be resolved peacefully," he said. "We religious leaders can help heads of state and politicians in these matters. Azerbaijan is an example of tolerance and representatives of various religions live here and this played an important role in selecting Azerbaijan as a venue."
