Poland demands Belarus explain refusing entry to Polish official

Deputy Director of European Department of Poland's Foreign Ministry met with Pavel Latushka, the Belarussian ambassador in Warsaw Tuesday, demanding explanations why an adviser to the Polish prime minister was refused entry into Belarus.

"Representative of the Polish foreign ministry demanded information on reasons and expressed disapproval for actions taken by the Belarussian side", foreign ministry spokesman Pawel Dobrowolski said in a statement.

Michal Dworczyk, who advises Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz on the situation of ethnic Poles abroad, said he was turned away Sunday at the Kuznica Bialastocka border crossing some 200 km northeast of Warsaw.

Dworczyk said the incident was probably a reaction to his previous contacts with activists of the Union of Poles in Belarus who are supported by Warsaw but whose leadership of the 400,000 strong Polish ethnic community there is not recognized by the Belarussian government.
