Belarus KGB: alleged street action plans not to materialize

MINSK. Dec 20 (Interfax) - Alleged plans of the Belarussian opposition to organize street protests in spring 2007 "are completely unfounded and hopeless," the head of the Belarussian secret service, the KGB, said on Wednesday.

"Public security and stability are guaranteed," Stepan Sukhorenko told Interfax.

Living standards in Belarus are rising and this and the general economic situation in the country rules out any domestic reasons for instability, he said.

"Many were expecting that the friction with Russia because of energy would give rise to inflation. I think that a solution to the problem has been found," Sukhorenko said.

"The KGB is aware of the tasks facing us. Today, when there are many provocations and challenges, nonstandard solutions are needed," he added.
