Belarus, Russia: Natural Gas Deal

Russia and Belarus have reached an agreement on the delivery of natural gas and the sale of Belarusian energy transit company Beltransgaz, sources said Dec. 6. Russian state-controlled natural gas monopoly Gazprom reportedly will purchase a 49 percent stake in Beltransgaz for approximately $4 billion, which Belarus will use to pay for natural gas from Russia for $200 per 1,000 cubic meters. The $4 billion figure was based on an appraisal by ABN AMRO. Within the next several years, Belarus will reportedly allow foreign companies to purchase stakes in nonstrategic Belarusian enterprises to raise funds for future energy expenses.
