Belarus discussed in Vilnius

The Soviet education system still exists in Belarus. Vilnius is the new home of the European Humanities University (EHU), which was closed by the authorities in Minsk in 2004. A conference about the challenges facing education in Belarus is being held in the Lithuanian capital, 11-12 December.

Speakers include the Lithuanian Minister of Education and Science, Roma Zakaitiene, and the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Per Unckel.

The conference, part of the project 'Belarusian Higher Education for Democracy and Human Rights', is being funded by the EU Commission and the Nordic Council of Ministers.

"The Nordic Council of Ministers is involved with Belarus in several ways. We support European Humanities University and we run a programme of co-operation with NGOs. We see the development of higher education as one of the most important themes that countries in the Baltic Sea Region ought to address,"said Teppo Heiskanen, manager of the Nordic Council of Ministers" Office in Lithuania.
