Foreign special services have persisting interest in Belarus - KGB

MINSK. Dec 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Foreign special services have a persisting interest in the processes underway in Belarus, including in the future period of parliamentary elections slated for 2008, the State Security Committee of Belarus (KGB) head of Information and PR Valery Nadtachayev said.

"In the beginning, they focused on the process of reformation of the Armed Forces, on the implementation by Belarus of its obligations on the withdrawal of nuclear weapons from its territory. Then their priorities changed, but their interest persisted," Nadtachayev said.

This year, KGB stopped several foreign information gathering operations on the military group of the Union State. "Four Belarusian and Russian citizens were sentenced to various terms for the crimes they committed," Nadtachayev said.

"The activity of foreign special services and non-governmental organizations, partly financed by special services, intensifies during important public and political campaigns," Nadtachayev said.

This is explained by "the desire of foreign opponents of Belarusian authorities to affect the situation in Belarus," he said.

"In this sense the upcoming presidential elections will not be an exception. We know, and we have repeatedly said, through which non- governmental institute and organizations they are funding Belarusian opposition and holding seminars for it," Nadtachayev said.
