MINSK, Belarus (AP) - Belarus' authoritarian president on Sunday threatened to expel the U.S. ambassador if Washington imposes more sanctions on the country.
Ambassador Karen Stewart said earlier this month that the United States could add new sanctions against Belarus over its refusal to free political prisoners and allow democratic freedoms.
The United States already has imposed sanctions, including travel restrictions on Belarusian officials and measures against a state oil processing company.
"In the event of introducing serious economic sanctions regarding Belarus by the United States, the Belarusian side will respond in the most severe way in all directions _ political, economic and other directions. The first person to be thrown out will be the U.S. ambassador," President Alexander Lukashenko told reporters.
