IMF mission is in Belarus to continue talks over loan

A mission of the International Monetary Fund for granting a $2-billion loan to Belarus started working in Minsk on December 15, BelTA learnt from the IMF office in Belarus.

The first phase of the negotiations between the Government, the National Bank of Belarus and the IMF mission, which stayed in Minsk from late October to late November 2008, was a success. Belarus requested the loan in order to increase the state gold and foreign exchange reserves and create a safety cushion necessary for stable operation of the economy in view of the global financial crisis.

"Belarus' authorities and the mission reached great progress and general agreement regarding the policy of measures to provide assistance to Belarus in overcoming this complicated global situation. However, more time is needed to ascertain technical issues of the policy. Last weekend the mission returned to Washington but the negotiations on the programme continue," the IMF office said.

This time the IMF mission, the Government and the National Bank of Belarus will continue the negotiations on providing a loan to Belarus.

According to the existing IMF procedures, a relevant package of documents will be submitted to the IMF Executive Council for the final approval after all technical points are coordinated.
