Caritas Polska and the Senate help impoverished Poles in the east

Caritas Polska, Poland's most active Catholic charity, is cooperating for the third year in a row with the Polonia Office in the Senate to prepare holiday packages to send to needy Poles living in the Ukraine and Belarus.

The holiday packages consist of food, clothing, cleaning supplies and other necessities. Forty tonnes of food, 7,364 winter coats, 20 tonnes of chemical products have been collected - to make up five truck loads of goods being shipped to Poland's eastern neighbours.

The packages will be delivered to 5,000 of the neediest Polish families living in the two eastern countries. The holiday packages are intended for the elderly, the impoverished, and families with many children.

"Caritas, for many years, has realized countless projects for Poles living in the East," stated Father Marian Subocz, director of Caritas Polska. "In giving the gifts, we work in cooperation with Polish parishes and local Caritas organizations that help ensure that the help gets to those who need it most," he added.

The priest highlighted the fact that, "with this type of gesture, we want to show that we are with them and we remember those who need help, and we are able to help people through difficult material situations."

The first truck of packages left for Belarus on 16 December. All of the 5,000 families are scheduled to receive their gifts before Christmas next week.
