Lithuania welcomes development of Belarus-EU dialog - minister

MINSK. Dec 29 (Interfax) - Lithuania welcomes Belarusian steps towards normalized relations with the European Union, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Vygaudas Usackas told a Monday press conference in Minsk.

"We welcome attempts to intensify dialog between Belarus and the EU. We want constructive relations with Belarus both bilaterally and multilaterally, at the EU," he said.

"Lithuania also welcomes the Belarusian government wish to join the EU Eastern Partnership initiative," the minister said. "Democratization is a Eastern Partnership aspect."

Usackas lauded the recent registration of the public movement For Freedom in Belarus and the latest decision concerning two non- governmental newspapers.

"Belarus knows that the European Union expects its further steps towards an open society," the minister said.

"Belarus has a generally positive attitude to the Eastern Partnership program," Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov said. "We would like to wait until this project takes its final form."

He noted that cooperation must be equal.

Usackas said he had offered Belarus to consider the formation of a tripartite working group on Ukrainian electricity transit to Lithuania via Belarus. "Our proposal was accepted," he said.
