IMF to lend billions to Belarus

Laos News.Net

The International Monetary Fund has agreed to lend Belarus $2.5 billion to help it deal with effects of the global economic crisis.

Belarus has joined some other European countries, including Hungary and Finland, in being granted IMF credit lines.

Without the IMF boost, Belarus would be unlikely to be able to weather the financial crisis, which has seen a withering of its exports and currency reserves in recent months.

The IMF agreement marks an easing of the international isolation of the government of President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the country with an iron hand since 1994.
