Belarus FM criticizes EU sanctions

Associated Press

Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov says a recent European Union decision to impose sanctions on his country is based on double standards.

In November, the EU extended for another year an assets freeze against the government of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko due to an absence of progress to introduce democratic and human rights reforms.

The bloc, however, kept a temporary suspension on other sanctions, including a travel ban on senior Belarusian officials.

Martynov said Thursday this decision is contradictory and "based on double standards."

He said that Belarus was nevertheless prepared to engage with the EU on issues of mutual interest.
