Lukashenko declares commitment to stronger ties with Russia

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has reiterated his commitment to boosting ties with Russia during a meeting with a Russian presidential envoy on Thursday.

The Belarusian president said that worsening relations with Russia would result in his "political death."

"Let's be sincere - I'm not going to abandon this policy [towards Russia], but we will also improve ties with our neighbors," he said at a meeting with the Russian president's envoy to the Volga Federal District, Grigory Rapota.

He added that improving ties with Ukraine and the European Union will not lead to worsening relations with Russia.

"Russia should understand that we, as a state, should first of all build normal relations with our neighbors," the Belarusian president said.
