Early voting begins in Belarus

Polling booths opened across Belarus at 10 a.m. today as early voting began for the December 19 presidential elections in this former Soviet republic of 10 million people.

Even though early voting is practiced in many countries, opposition candidates and rights activists urge people to stay away from what they call "an instrument of vote-rigging".

There are 10 candidates vying for the country's top job, including the incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994.
