Several held in Belarus election riot

Several people are being held after riot squads in the Belarusian capital Minsk successfully used stun grenades to break up an opposition protest against an expected victory by Alexander Lukashenko in Sunday's presidential elections. The opposition candidate Vladimir Nekliayev has received attention for a head injury.

Exit polls meantime put the incumbent President way ahead of all nine other contenders and suggest outright re-election.

Foreign observers speak about a smooth voting process, but criticize the Belarusian electoral authorities for widely allowing early ballot-casting.First counts are expected this night. The turnout topped 75 percent.
