President Lukashenko scores convincing victory in Belarus election

Incumbent President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has won a convincing victory at Presidential elections in the country held on Sunday. According to preliminary results of the Central Electoral Commission, he secured almost 80% of the votes. The voter turnout stood at over 90 %. The Belarus opposition, however, refuses to acknowledge the results of the elections.

On Sunday, after voting stations had shut down, the opposition assembled on Independence square in Minsk for a protest meeting. The demonstrators attempted to storm the Government building, but were dispersed by special task forces and Interior Ministry troops. According to various sources, up to 500 people have been detained.
