Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has voiced hope that Belarus will continue on its path to democracy following Sunday's elections.
At a Moscow press conference, Medvedev said that he would like for the elections to create a more modern state based on democratic values, which is geared towards fostering friendly ties with its neighbors, while emphasizing that the Belarusian elections are a domestic affair of that country.
According to the Central Elections Committee of Belarus, incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko received 80 percent of the votes, which is disputed by the opposition.
