CIS, OSCE monitors: Belarusian presidential election transparent, democratic

The CIS and OSCE monitors believe that the December 19th presidential election in Belarus was transparent and democratic. This came in a statement by the Head of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev during a news briefing in Minsk.

On yesterday's unrest in Minsk, Lebedev said that the detention of numerous opposition members has nothing to do with election campaign assessments. He said some of the advantages were the openness of the election process, and also the possibility for the observers to assess ballot-casting and monitor ballot-counting without interference.

When commenting on Lukahsenko's victory, Sergei Lebedev said that the election returns spoke for themselves.
