Russian ambassador to Belarus Alexander Surikov has sided with Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko's brutal crack down on street protestors, saying the demonstrators' actions were illegal.
The Russians realise that the meeting in Minsk after Lukashenko's disputed election victory, was unsanctioned and so participants violated the law, Lenta cited Interfax Belarus as saying.
International opinion condemned the Belarusian authorities for the crackdown, with Freedom House calling on the west to reinstate sanctions against Minsk.
