MINSK -- Authorities in Belarus will hold five former presidential candidates in custody on suspicion of organizing protests over the disputed vote in the ex-Soviet republic last weekend, police said on Thursday.
The five candidates and 14 other opposition activists detained in a crackdown on protests over the vote on Sunday will be held to face potential charges of "organizing mass disorder", Minsk police spokesman Alexander Lastovsky told Reuters.
They could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
