Ukrainian MFA demands immediate release of Ukrainians detained in Belarus

Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus Valentin Velichko has been invited to the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine for a meeting with Ukraine's First Deputy Foreign Minister Ruslan Demchenko.

The Ukrainian side once again expressed its deep disappointment that the Ukrainian citizens who are detained in Minsk have not been released now. Demchenko said that such actions of the Belarusian side do not meet the spirit of friendly bilateral relations between Ukraine and Belarus. The deputy minister emphasized the need for the immediate release of Ukrainian citizens, since their further stay in detention is harmful to bilateral relations, according to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry. Ambassador Velichko assured that he will immediately inform the official Minsk on the position of the Ukrainian side. During opposition protests after the presidential election in Belarus on December 19 in Minsk the police detained 639 people, including two citizens of Ukraine.
